As a newbie to Google Adwords I wanted to know how I can change the display url after I have created and submitted my campaign. I am wanting to get started in affiliate marketing and have chosen a music dowload affiliaate program. I put there official url as my display url and my affiliate url as my destination url. However, after researching further I see that there is a main ad placed in the top 4 that has the same display url. Can I change it? Can I provide a virtual url that doesn't really exist but will take them to the right destination url? thanks

You can edit the URL by clicking on the Ad Group and then editing the Ad.

The 'Edit' link is located right next to or underneath the Ad.

When your ad is reviewed, one of the things the reviewer will look for is that the domain of the Display URL matches the domain of the Destination URL. So, as long as the domains are the same, you should be OK.

This is reviewed on a case by case basis by an actual human being, btw, not by an automated system.

why does the Destination URL and the Display URL have to be the same? Or is it jus the root domain? As an affiliate i would need to include my id, etc...

Just the root domain. For example this would be OK:

Display URL: www.thissite.com
Destination URL: www.thissite.com?ref=gaw&id=12345

While this would not:

Display URL: www.thissite.com
Destination URL: www.someothersiteentirely.com?ref=gaw&id=12345
