I was happy to see others were having Regional Targeting issues. Since that does not seem to fully work, here's my dilema.

I do web work in Anytown, US. If I type in web designers in Anytown, MANY MANY GoogleAds appear. Unless I'm willing to pay big bucks, I'll never appear up top. I only want to appear when someone types in something like web designers in Anytown, but since regional targeting will not work for me (or I should saw IS NOT working for me) I am not sure what to do.

Any suggestions?

Try exact matching for your town/area.

But, won't all the other web designers still show above me?

I mean if they're paying $1.00 pc and I'm paying .05 pc, and they include web design as one of their keywords and my exact term is [Anytown Web Design] they will still show above me. Isn't that correct?

I understand that I won't show unless someone types in [Anytown Web Design] which is what I want, but I would think the higher paying "national" company will show above me.

You want to exclude your competition?

That's just how the system works. You pay more, you get better positioning.

I know. I understand how it works. I guess I'm just trying to figure out a way to work this Regional Targeting. Oh well...

Your ad won't necessarily be lower than the national ads just because they have a higher max CPC. You have the advantage that you are only targeting [web designers in Anytown] versus your competitors targeting "web designers". With a well written, well targeted ad your CTR should be very high, lowering your actual CPC.

The larger companies that do phrase and broad matching have a harder time producing relevant ads for the whole set of keywords their ads show on. A good ad and exact keyword combination can do well in a competitive market without breaking the bank.
