i have a site thats front page on google for a keyword. i also display an adword for the same keyword. could i be penalized for having the ad and natural positioning on the same page?

No, if you page is not considered spammy by Google there should be no problem. I have, and have had, lots of listings like that and never had a problem with it but I am actually not exactly sure what the official Google policy might be on this. However, my guess is that as long as your page come up as number one because it IS the most relevant page for the query it should be OK.
