a question for adwords gurus if you don't mind!:)

i started a general campaign for widgets.

now i have a few more specific campaigns for blue widgets, then red then green.

i now want my specific ads to show rather than the general one for these particular terms.

do i add the red blue and green as negative keywords on the general campaign so that ad no longer shows? would this automatically trigger the new specific ad with those specific search terms.

what's happening at the moment is that sometimes i'm seeing the general ad and sometimes the specific one.

any advice really appreciated.

thanks

Good idea. This will work.

Else, you try reducing the CPC of the generic term and increase the CPC of the specific terms.

If you have two competiting ads, the one with the higher CPC (not CTR) is shown (AWA posted about this somewhere a while ago), so reducing the general ad CPC and increasing the more specific ads should help.

You should also run your more general campaign through the sandbox, see what terms it will show up for, then add negative keywords for more control of where such a general ad is shown. This will allow you (except in the case of regional targeting) to control which ad is shown without worrying about how G picks between competiting ads.
