Increasing a keyword's CTR improves its rank. Does anyone know if improving the overall Ad Group CTR will also affect rank? Will removing lower CTR keywords in an Ad Group help the higher CTR keywords to rank even higher?

Yes it does. The better the overall adgroup CTR the better the performance (read position).

No. Each individual keyword/keyphrase has its own position based on its own CTR*CPC. It's not based on the Adgroup or overall campaign.

I concur with seasalt. Keyword CTR decides the ad position.
