So I deleted a bunch of ad groups and yet they are still here, except they say Ad Group Deleted for the status now. So how do I get rid of these ad groups I don't want to see any more? ... they are cluttering up my valuable screen real estate.

I had the same problem a while back - here's how you fix it. There's a pull down menu under the campaign header on the left-hand side that probably says "Show All Ad Groups". If you select the "Show Only Active Groups" it will hide all of your delected or paused Ad Groups.
