Disabling Keywords after zero impressions

I just set up a new campaign with a couple a new adgroups. Within 12 hours of setup, 30 of my new keywords were disabled with the little red asterik (disabled due to low CTR). The highest number of impressions for the disabled keywords was 12 - and 10 of the disabled keywords had zero impressions (I waited 2 days to make sure Adwords reporting was up to date).

My question is, How Do Google Know?

Just checked my campaign and had 8 keywords with 0 impressions disabled....

I reenabled them now to see what will happen.

some keywords are disabled for another reason than low CTR. It might be a trademark keywords, extreme adult terms, etc

True, but these type of terms have always been listed as "disapproved", not with the red asterick for low CTR as are my zero impression terms.

This is another case where contacting AdWords support would be in order, if the facts are exactly as reported. This scenario would be truly odd, and we'd certainly want to know about it.

However, there are a few things to check first before writing. Here are my top three, based on a great deal of time spent with many hundreds of advertisers.

* As silly as it sounds, when you're looking at the number of impressions for a disabled keyword, what date range are you set for? If you are looking at 'today', and the keyword has been running for a week, then you're not getting the full picture. Please note that the date range is a 'sticky setting' that remains from one account visit to the next.

* Has the keyword already been disabled elsewhere in the account? And, are you re-using it without deleting it first in all other campaigns and Ad Groups where it has been disabled?

* Are the keywords really disabled, or are they merely 'slowed'? A disabled keyword will have a single red asterisk, while a slowed keyword will have two yellow/gold asterisks.

Any one of these things would explain what you are experiencing - and I certainly hope that this turns out to be the case. ;)
