Hey there

First time poster, long time reader, so go easy!

A friend of mine is being bombarded with emails from a client asking why their b2b ecommerce site isn't listed in this free search engine, or that free info database( for exmaple thelocalweb.net, oxfordshire.co.uk, kellysearch.com, touch.co.uk).

I offered the opinion that the SE's in question were not worth bothering with as they would not generate any significant amount of traffic, but this got me thinking - what about free submission? Is it still an option?

Does anybody have any hot tips for this area (other than the obvious DMOZ, google, etc, etc).

I'm interested in anything constructive so don't hold back!

Thanks in advance :)

Hi and welcome to Webmaster World.

What is the downside of a free submission? Some time, I suppose. Other than that, not much danger in doing it.
On the upside, you could be helping your inbound links.

It also gives you an opportunity to take a fresh look at how you describe the site. When you describe it for the submission, try out different descriptions. You might find one direction that you haven’t used before and that you really like.

Minor UK directories are often a good way of acquiring incoming links.

They don't often provide much traffic though. Whether they are worth it or not depends on the effort involved in submitting and whether the links are being counted by Google or not.

Client education on 'search engine market share' is the best option here IMO.
