I was hoping somebody could assist with me gaining a better understanding for the market share by usage of search engines in the UK. I am particularly interested in Google's presence Vs the PPC super powers i.e. Overture, Espotting and Looksmart.

Many thanks in advance.

Top 10 UK specific "engines":

1 Google UK
2 Yahoo UK
3 Ask Jeeves
4 Freeserve
5 Altavista UK
6 MSN UK
7 ntlworld
8 Tiscali
9 Yell UK
10 Lycos UK

I am unsure how the International engines fit into this table.

Do you mean Google's position vis a vis the PPC market?

If so, I'd suggest that Overture probably still own the lions share of the market in respect of PPC, Google is the leader in the "smaller" advertising arena.

The "super powers" Espotting and Looksmart are way way way off the pace compared to the other two.

Overture currently provides ads for these:
3 Ask Jeeves
4 Freeserve
5 Altavista UK
6 MSN UK
8 Tiscali
10 Lycos UK
14 BT OpenWorld
16 DogPile UK
And sooner or later they will have Yahoo (their new parent company) on the books too.

Espotting have these:
2 Yahoo UK
12 Euroseek
13 192.com
16 DogPile UK
17 Abrexa

Google has:
1 Google UK
7 ntlworld
14 BT OpenWorld
16 DogPile UK

Looksmart has:
6 MSN UK

Overture already do have Yahoo results. The searches made on .com Yahoo are shown on Overture UK, where IP filtering indicates a UK user. It's a significant amount of results also.

Absolutely, it just reinforces the Overture domination of the UK PPC market. I was of course only referring to Yahoo UK :-)

Bobby,

No offense inteded here, but how did you compile your list of most popular search engines for the UK? How can you be assured of the accuracey? And would you have any advice on how to monitor this as it does change, I remember some previous postings in 2001 saying MSN UK was the most popular...etc

-Thanks

Hi guys!

Wondering here, if I`m the only one who cannot understand the system.... A question for all of you:

>>Overture currently provides ads for these:
>>3 Ask Jeeves

Then why do I see Google ads coming up instead of Overture`s?

Interested

If you look at the list at the bottom of the page, you can get results from Overture, Mirago, Lycos or Webfinder.

Overture may not be the primary advertising source, but that is because Ask Jeeves appears to use all the PPC agencies!

There was an "official" version of this list by one of those big management consultancy companies that I found online before launching my site - I think it began with an "N" from waht I remember.

Stats were for global search though, not just UK.

Last time this was mentioned on here quite a few of the bigger (U.S.A based?) people posted server log stats showing where the bulk of your own traffic came from.

Anyone care to repeat the exercise? It would be a big help to us minnows.
