Will the new design revive the dog?

We'd have to wait and see, of course.

You can have a preview at Lycos.fr [home.lycos.fr] - already live for a couple of days.

I've had a chance to see it and it does look very good - they've also had a very good tidy up and hired and fired quite liberally - with positive results.

They're more on the ball in the money department as well, than they were before IMHO.

Does anyone think a redesign makes that much of a difference?

It's about the only mouseover effect I have seen that I like. The dog paw that show up when you mouse over a link.

Mack.

I think the money department might be in firm control of things at Lycos. It appears to sell its ad space well in advance to resellers. This can make a fair bit of business sense - they don't have to worry about sales staff wages, know up front a good part of their yearly income/budget and can concentrate on developing other content - like dating / ringtones and so on (why try to compete with google etc – it would be a losing battle for them). Perhaps its ignored what others are doing and just looked at what’s best for it – developing content and outsourcing the search side of things. Some of the content seems good – and its updated daily.

That said – it really doesn’t seem to create much traffic to the sites I manage. Although it’s not a sensible approach I try to avoid it like the plague – mainly as I hate the fact that its “advertising partners” will rip small traders out of a fortune if they can. And then there’s those daily 3-4 phone calls a day from their resellers :)

Are there any good resources on Lycos Uk out there (aside from what they say on the site)? Has anyone had a positive advertising experience with the them recently (can you deal with them direct)?

You can deal with them direct, but not for advertising AFAIK - so if you do you have to provide content and you invariably end up on a revenue share deal.

Original design went live at Jubii.dk [jubii.dk] a couple of weeks ago. The team is responsible for the new design for all Lycos portals. They've also updated their algo on Jubii. In a pleasant way I must say ;)

Lots of it is very buggy. Password request come up for alot of pages, and if you press cancel you get the page anyway, but apparently with no style sheets.

There are quite a few dead links as well. I'm sure it will settle - it's hard to get everything just right for public launch. Saying that, it does pay to try very, very hard...

Actually I like it a lot, much better distinction in the Search Results from sponsered to normal results (having said that I cant remember the old lycos much now!)

When I first used the Internet Lycos was the first search engine I used :) - Probably due to the dog adverts on the television - they did use to advertise heavly.

Mack - Re mouseover - UK does not have the dogs paw :(

Lets hope they get the traffic to match.

I rank 1st, 5th and 19th for one keyword so lets see if I get any refferals from them as there have been bugger all in the past!

Lycos.co.uk looks good.

Initially when the comic like black and white page comes up, I thought I broken something ...but its good, I like it!

Lycos UK - just had a look at the new site - very impressed. Used to be cluttered with US listings - but this seems to have been rectified. I get better listings here than on Google - might start promoting it!
