New product supposed to guarantee you No1 listing

I got a cold call this morning from a company <snip> trying to sell me a new product <snip>.
They are promising No1 positions for all the major search engines. 5 search terms cost £595 per year.

I am presuming that this is a scam - probably something to do with reselling pay per click. But as I never have time to read the whole of these forums, I am wondering if I have missed something.

Sounds a little dubious all in all.

As a rule of thumb, always ask for references and testimonials from satisfied customers (!) that can be chased up.

If in doubt, walk away.

As you have said, it is probably just a pay per click reseller or management program.

That is the only way to guarantee number 1 positions.

They'll probably give you a list of keywords that if you look at Overture or Espotting you'll be able to get yourself for 10p a click.

Thanks for the info.

I asked them to email references, but they've not arrived yet. They probably got scared off when I mentioned Webmasterworld.

Their salespeople are cheeky, though. When I asked if it was PPC they told me that they're not involved in that stone-age technology. Their product is new, they told me. And endorsed by all the major search engines. So it's strange that I've never read about it at Webmasterworld. You lot are just so behind the times :)

Sounds dubious to me. Nobody can get you that kind of listing, unless it is for keywords like "asdfasdf" and "adasfasfsdffsd".

And endorsed by all the major search engines.

That would be the point to end all serious conversation with the company.

Anything you choose to say after hearing that should be just to anger them or to confuse them (while having a darn good time at it).

mistah,
Anyone that makes sweeping claims should be able to provide evidence to you to back up their claim.

>You lot are just so behind the times

hehehe oh yes.

>for keywords like "asdfasdf" and "adasfasfsdffsd".

Yes, some proudly make claims for phrases with several uncompetitive words. I saw a good one today where there were only ten responses in the serps and the SEO company was proud to hold number 2 out of the ten! LOL For the client, they met their guarantee of being in the top ten.

Note to self - Ensure that flints are sharpened for new upcoming client campaigns.

In this situation I usually ask where there site comes for the keywords "Search Optimisation" and I've never had anyone give me a satisfactory answer. They almost always say "Our site is undergoing a re-build right now but when its done it will be at the top."
