UK SE submission - back to basics

Where do you start with 'traditional' submissions

Hello all

Im helping someone promote their relatively new site in the UK - Its an industrial non-competitive sector with low search volumes and therefore is probably not right for a full on PPC campaign. Kellysearch have quoted a ludicrous £2000 for a focused campaign but they have a limited reach - albeit an industry specific one.

The webmaster has so far paid a host £150 for a submission programme (100 SE for £100 - you know the routine) which I explained is rather like submitting your telephone listing to a directory thats not in alphabetical order!

What Im really looking for is a refresher on UK SE submissions starting virtually from scratch.

A few years ago when developing my site I went for Ink, Google, Teoma, the Open Dir and avoided Looksmart (who at the time were considered pariah's) and the Yahoo expensive submissions. Since then Ive become a PPC reliant because its the only way to survive in my industry thus losing touch with the traditional methods and mechanisms that make websites work.

I think it would be good to have an update on this forum of where things are in the UK with submissions and the current state of play with the SE that work and those that are no longer worth it. So with a spend of say £500 max - how does a UK webmaster -WITHOUT PPC - get a site visible and viable?

Cheers
C

start off with Positiontech and submit to the following:

Inktomi
Teoma
Fast

also do ASK.co.uk although this is through positiontech, the link is on ask.co.uk homepage.

I still rate the Yahoo UK and Looksmart UK 1 time listing fees, rather than the looksmart PPC program.

I think the main 1 will be Inktomi with a number of pages that should be submitted.

hope that helps.

What Shak said, plus, in the interest of 'completeness'....

Manual submit to Google (not really needed, but it makes you feel better;))
Altavista (go for the free 'ransom note' submission)
Alltheweb
DMOZ

....and Submit to as many on-theme free directories as you can find (or can be bothered to) - it all helps with the Google ranking

You can also submit it for free to searchuno.co.uk

Sites are included on a regular basis.

True. However to get into the UK version of Teoma through PFI you need to submit via ask.co.uk. The normal submission via the PT site won't do it, even though PT also handle the Ask UK submissions.

Ask UK are meant to start defaulting to the UK Teoma DB any day now.

hmm - that means that to go "all the way" using PFI, you have to pay teoma/ask.com AND ask.co.uk?

Yep - unfortunately so!
