Many Thanks to Rusty, and others who posted these messages of warning, and thanks to - Ask Jeeves who now displays these messages.
Do not take up any offers, I nearly did, but after seeing these messages, managed to cancel my credit card and stop payment.
You can register your name with Nominet (check spelling) for as little as £2.50 per Domain. These people are charging £100 per Domain, and using underhand tactics to try and secure your custom.
The Company is now not in South Wales but in Regent Street, London.
I was nearly caught out, and hope more people take the time to check out offers by telephone, espaeciall where they need paying then and there over the telephone.

MANY THANKS TO ALL, and I'll buy you a drink sometime 'Rusty'

welcome to webmasterworld.

you are correct that people should NOT deal with potential fraudsters such as these, and should in all cases contact Nominet if they have a problem.

However just to clarify:

You can register your name with Nominet (check spelling) for as little as £2.50 per Domain.

The rate is £5,00 + vat for a 2 year registration, however this is ONLY for nominet members and NOT for Joe Public.

I am a Nominet member and non-members get charged £80+vat. However there is a ton of good honest folk selling domain names who are members, full list is on the Nominet website. Prices vary and so do services and support.

1) check internet for domain name, not the same as company name ( i.e.) - fred bloggs, domain name: plumbing service.

2) contact fred bloggs to say someone is trying to register in his area as a plumbing service, using the name fred bloggs.

at this stage fred is pressurised and worried about loosing trade he has built up in his area!, he has a domain name but is not called fred bloggs.

3) we can register your company and stop attempts at someone using your name, please suppply us with your credit card now (only say it's £100 - so he doesn't realise it's £100 per domain)!.

4) managed to get payment and rip fred bloggs off for £100 per domain (£400 - £500)

5) perhaps register name first as fred bloggs, so he has to buy it off us, or use our hosting service, which we can rip fred bloggs off again.

it's easy done and easy money lost to the un-wary.

i hope this has explained a little in my own words.

You can say the same about most of the domain registration scams that are going on at the moment.

What really gets me is the fact that these charlatans give the rest of us who are providing a professional internet service a bad name with small and medium sized businesses.
