Starting to see a few referrals from Splut [at long last] anyone else with experience of them?

I have seen them showing up a few times a month but just wonder how many of the follow-ups are people trying to sell ME services...which wasn't quite the idea.

Still every hit is a bonus and Splut seems quite a user friendly SE so more power to it.

Videoman,

Were they trying to sell you any specific services such as SEO?

You must have Crystal Balls!!!!!

I have had about 3 SEO calls a month. "We found you on the Internet......" I'm pretty sure that most of them know no more than I do and I know SFA compared to you guys.(I usually say something along the lines of "so your well into Inktomi Themes then??? After the silence....they are usually quite shocked that they have someone who knows the jargon...bit more Bullshit and they're on the point of paying ME!!)

Whenever we expose our contact numbers phone/fax/email the junk calls/faxes/mail follows- I have just had a "home improvements" call as I was typing- told the idiot on the phone he'd got through to Basildon CID- he didn't stay long. We cant do much about it even LOOT gets raided by one of the online auctions.

The bottom line is that our SE efforts generate more work than the Postcard in the newsagents and its free.

It's been troubling me for a while now, the fact that the calls seem to coincide with a listing.

Are you listed at other UK based directories and if so have you noticed a similar pattern?

I'm with around 20 UK SE/directories. I've got a link to a list of them and just worked through them. I dont get paranoid about the uninvited calls - just plain annoyed. Because my Site Hits would be fairly small per day, I do get a bit suspicious if I see one referral in a log and haven't had an enquiry...but remember getting a call when I was busy, from someone selling something. Problem is my wife is not as adapt at playing the little clip of Billy Connolly down the phone that resides on my desktop. ....its the one where he bellows "Arhhhhh go'n @$%& yourself." Not very polite but it sure comes as a surprise to the person on the end of the phone.

Videoman,
I understand what you are saying. The best one I got was a from a firm that said, "...you are nowhere on the search results, so, how are your cutomers going to find you?"
My customers already know me, it's the ones that don't that concern me. I didn't play with the individual, but simply asked about their services. They weren't doing anything special, apart from meta tags and focusing on keywords that wern't competitive. Still, they'll be helping someone, somewhere.
I did feel their tactics were a bit underhand - they had not checked my rankings, and they were just doing a lot of phoning around. They even spoke to some of my clients and used the same tactic. LOL.

We used to advertise in magazines, but, got more calls from "sales people" than the value in the enquiries. We stopped advertising.

SEs have pulled in a good proportion of our new business in the past few years. From a cost effective point of view, it's the best.

Hi folks, just signed up (thanks henki for the heads up) and was thrilled to see you all talking about one of our clients!

Just to let you know oilman - Splut doesn't have a spider, it's a directory and all sites are submitted directly.

They've recently implemented ODP data as a supplement to their own, which has been well received, but they (and us) are always happy to accept criticism.

Its good to know that some of you are seeing results from Splut - especially now I read that Goto are going to have a minimum of 5p per click! Splut minimum is 1p AND advertisers get a free £50 credit to their account to let them trial the service too.

Anyway, sorry for reviving such an old post, but thanks for your kind comments

>>Splut doesn't have a spider
Yeah - I think I was reading the boards with my eyes-crossed that day. Pretty sure I was thinking of Slurp (which still doesn't make sense in the context of the thread ;))

Welcome to WMW btw.

Splut is a good, albeit small, referral source and I have gained 2 clients from the referrals - and no phone calls from sales people either (unlike some other UK 'directories'. Well worth a listing and welcome severina!
