I'm new to all this and don't know where to start. I run a UK based membership website with a .com address. It is a database driven site with html and java. The engine is written in ColdFusion.
It is a social and professional networking community that has appeal on several levels.
Any help and advice would be helpful.
I am not very technical so would appreciate it if you could keep it simple.
Oh, and there's no budget. :-) Thanks.

Richard

Welcome to WebmasterWorld richardfry :)

As I've seen mentioned in here many, many times - submit your site to DMOZ http*//dmoz.org/ the Open Directory Project.

Hi Richard, and welcome!

Pedanticist is correct - the single most important place to start would be a listing on DMOZ (Open directory). Make sure you read their guidelines before submitting.

As for other UK search engines and directories, this is a frequently-asked question here. This thread:

[webmasterworld.com...]

contains links to three previous discussions with plenty of suggestions for sites to submit to.

One other thing you should do is run your site through the Sim Spider tool to see if search engines can actually index it:

Good luck!

Thanks very much. The directory is a good place to start and has provided me with lists of websites to link to as well.

Hi All,

The best site we have been using over the last three years is <snip>.

What we like about it is that its easy to use and fast loading and the best of course is that its free to list a site's url.

Just my two cents worth!

I don't know why the moderators have not yet removed your URL from your message. I also note that your site is not even ranked by Google, how do achive hits?
