I have spent most of my time and efforts improving my ranking in google and also using paid ads in espotting and overture. Other than this my submissions have no real strategy or system.

Which are the most important sites to submit a new site to?
Most of them seem to use google results anyway?

Said isn’t it

Try tracking down some of the smaller UK directories that offer free listings they can help with both traffic & increase in link popularity

Our site is non-profit making, so our findings may not be pertinent here. Most of our referrals do however come from our free listing in the Yahoo directory and a free listing in the Zeal directory, through which we receive good traffic via MSN's 'web-directory' results.

For our site, traffic from Google represents less than a tenth of our referrers and is eclipsed even by a DMOZ listing. Splashing out for paid inclusion in Inktomi, FAST and Teoma hasn't resulted in noticeably greater traffic.

Like Tigger says, some of the smaller directories can help in both referrals and link popularity. Submission to DMOZ and Yahoo should certainly help your traffic drive and if you're a non-profit making site, give Zeal a shot - otherwise a paid submission to Looksmart may be worth considering, although I know others may disagree with that one!

Just my two cents worth.
