Worth Doing A New UK SE/dir?

Is it worth doing a new UK search engine/directory that would cover only sites from the UK? By this I mean an index that is UK specific rather than a subset of an index based on the IP of the host site (like Google etc). I have solved the website:country problem that SEs like Google etc have and can produce a fairly good CNO index for the UK (or indeed any European country) in a relatively short time. (Ireland was easy since there are so few websites. :) )

I think IP and country indexes are irrelevant in this context. If I search google.com for "washing machines uk" it's PR 100 before I start to get non UK suppliers. I never really did understand the purpose of google.co.uk from the consumers viewpoint although I can see it as a 'minor additional revenue stream for not much effort', from google's point of view.

jmccormac - if you can make a uk search engine as good as your irish one, go for it. can you add more statistics to it?

bunder - good quality stuff in your directory, better than ODP, but .... it looks like the ODP so people will expect it to be structured like the ODP .... keep working on it, you could have something very worthwhile in due course.

and if you two get together and create some gimmick like google's pagerank then you could have a very worthwhile search engine for the UK. good luck :)

Crazy fool

thanks for the comments and valuable feedback :)

We have only taken the one feed from ODP, so from now on all updates for this will be done by ourselves. We do of course, give proper credit to Open Directory on our site on all pages, so hopefully as we grow, it will also benefit them.

Bunder,
Had a look at your UK directory and like its simplicity and its clean lines. Have added a link.
Good luck mate - I think you will do well.

Nice UK directory bunder. It looks good and clean with no pop-ups or banners. Good luck! :)
