got a call today from these people, saying that someone has tried register our domain names but with .biz, .info etc. (we are .com .co.uk, .org). they said they were calling because these people are based in the same UK town as us but trade under a different name. they said they couldn't not issue them to these people, or tell us who they were, but they were authorised to sell them to us for £100 each.

we instantly thought it was a scam, (are .biz domains £100? etc). also they couldn't wait, or call us back or wait till tommorrow it had to be done now.

if they were legit, they could wait surely.

beware of these guys, they say they're calling out of cardiff, and sound quite plausible. it's only coz we're all natural pessimists that we told them to hop it.

(if they are legit and it is happening surely legally we are int he right if someone registers our company name with a different suffix?)

ahh, didn't think we'd be the first. it was quite funny, our whole staff all said "scam!" when we all heard about it.

a relief though. i hope smaller web people don;t get scared into buying.

Domain Verification Bureau,

Come under many vises, beware - they are a totally bogus company based in Swansea, UK.

I got a call from them in September too - telling me that people had attemped to register my domain names, lots of talk all, of it blatant technical lies and rubbish. The only way they could have possibly come into contact with this data was if they were the parent company that was actually registering the domain names.

I called Nominet about them and they'd never heard of them... I even informed the police of their little scam!

So if you're reading this! Don't call Internet companies again DVB - you muppet!

They are about as legitimate as the guys you see with the FBI T-Shirts that say "Female Body Inspector".

Internet Registrations Bureau - ha - what a name - don't even need to know what they do - you can tell they are a scam just by the name.

Yep - lots of our clients have been contacted by these scammers. Calls from a chap called Steve Verdi are also to be disregarded. This is the name used by the male rep of this company, regardless of what company name he uses!

There are several outfits running this scam at the moment but there is one in particular that is really caning it.

Nominet have actually taken the step of naming them and placing a link to a warning about them on the front page of the Nominet website. Warning page can be found at [nic.uk...]
