When you go to altavista.co.uk and search, how does it distinguish between uk only and worldwide? Is it a simple 'if it's not got .co.uk at the end its not UK'?

I ask this because I have really poor rankings on AV generally, but even worse on .co.uk (I have none). My site is based in the UK but is a .com. Could this be why?

Thanks!

we are a .org based in the UK...we are currently number one on altavista for a competitive single word search...don't worry, we aren't talking about a lot of traffic here...we've gained 5/6 visitors a week by moving up a page on av...we gained literally thousands by moving up a couple of places on Google to 11th

altavista isn't dead...but it looks a funny colour and doesn't move about a lot

I believe they filter country by IP # such as Google does. If your site is hosted in UK, your OK.

IP # filtering is the simplest technique. Since anyone can buy .com .org and .net TLDs I believe that they dont use it.

I get the same filtering result on Google or AV for sites hosted elsewhere.

According to what was said at the Search Engine Strategies conference in London by the SE reps - it helps if you have inbound links from UK sites such as small UK directories or sites relating to yours that have a .co.uk domain. If you link to other sites, linking to ones with a UK domain will help.

You also should have content relating to the UK such as an address or "company based in the UK" or whatever on as many pages as possible.

If you can, use UK in the html titles - at least on some of the pages.

The reps said that they do look at the IP address but they also take the content and inbound and outbound links into account when "regionalising".

Presumably this is either circumvented if you enter into the AV PFI and specify an additional region for your inclusion,

or

Should be an important consideration if you do want to figure in more than one region via PFI?
