Does anyone know anything about this company, they claim to protect a company from having their company domain name purchased

So far I've had 2 clients contact me after a phone call from this company, I'm sure this has to be a scam of some type

I can't say I know that organisation.

There are so many scams around which work on the basis of scare tactics, for example: "...someone is trying to register yourdomain.co.uk and we thought you might like to take advantage and register it (through us) before the other individual does and you could lose it for good."

I treat all these with a pinch of salt.

In the real world, if the domain name is registered in good time and renewed in advance, it should be no problem. I have sent several e-mails to mu clients to watch out for and to avoid these and similar scams.

Useful reminder about domain name renewals. [nominet.net]

<slightly funny thought>I wonder if they have to update nic.uk or nominet.uk (I bet they get the life of luxury.</slightly funny thought> :)

tigger - the name sounds familiar, and if its the same as the one i had bills from some months ago, then it's a scam. if they are soliciting money to protect domain names they have no control over, ie, scaring people into sending them money, report it to the police as they are attempting to obtain money fraudulently. also inform nominet / ICANN or whoever so that they can inform members if required.

engine - never treat them with a pinch of salt - scammers / fraudsters are criminals and should be reported to the police and the domain registration authorities.

you might also like to report it to domainscams.com - there is an interesting one there about Domain Registry of Canada and the legal action taken against them - they are currently sending out false invoices as Domain Registry of Europe and have been reported to the police and other authorities in the UK and USA

I had another client phone today after a call letting him know the .com of his company name was being purchased but they could stop this and let him have it for £200 unfornatley he didn't get a contact number.

I had one yesterday too. Told them not to worry the domain was either available or not. There is no way they can stop others registering the domain name without registering it themselves.

If I get a contact I will report this to nominet.

>never treat them with a pinch of salt

I always treat the threat of fraud seriously - it's the talk and claims which are treated with the sodium chloride. Perhaps hydrochloric acid may be more appropriate. ;)
