Do site maps help in SE placement? If so how should they be constructed? All pages or just main pages?

There are a few different schools of thought on that, try a site search for site map. I think not, they may help some engines spider your site, especially if your linking is not great or javascript, etc. But some think there are page rank consequences for Google. I think that is what a home page or category index page is for, to introduce the main pages under it. The third consideration is usability - is it helpful, or not to your visitors.
