How important is Tiscali?

Hi

I've only just found this site. Fantastic what a wonderful resource. My question is how important is Tiscali in the UK? I've only just returned to work after a year on maternity leave and it's all changed! Do I have to pay for a Looksmart entry to have any chance of getting into the top 10 listings? And what's the deal with Overture in the listings results?

In short.

Tiscali - I don't care about it gets limited traffic
L$ - Now PPC about 30 cents
Overture - Very powerful. You need to pay at least 15 cents and be in the top 3 to get your listing on several search engines.

P.S. Welcome back :)

Tiscali in its own right is of limited importance.

If I remember correctly it is 3 Overture sponsored results followed by syndicated £S with Google back fill. Anything remotely competitive you need Looksmart listing

Worth mentioning that Looksmart UK is not PPC (yet!)

It may still be worth paying Looksmart UK to get the MSN UK traffic, but many of us are still wary of Looksmart after the recent 'moving of the goalposts' on Looksmart UK.

Overture has both US and UK versions - check which is appropriate for your target market

Espotting does a similar PPC for UK specific search engines.

Tiscali is not worth worying about in its own right - it serves up a mixture of PPC backed up by Google.

I've only just returned to work after a year on maternity leave and it's all changed!

I went away for a long weekend and it all changed.

You need to visit the forums every day to avoid the 'duh' syndrome:)

I called looksmart uk, and they said they will not force the ppc USA system in the UK, but offer the choice. (for whatever thats worth)

JennyR, welcome to WebmasterWorld.

Generally speaking, in the last year, PPC and P4L has become the normal approach to drive traffic quickly, and, in most instances, if you want to consider free listings, you'll have to wait some time for the search engine spiders to find your website through high quality incoming links. Note, high quality links. Low quality links will do very little to help.

The goalposts are constantly moving and I highly recommend you look at the following forums here at WebmasterWorld to try to bring you up to speed.

Obviously, this forum for UK and Ireland-specific news.

Not true. Phone them and talk PPC with them and they are very happy to talk. However, we have found the experience to be quite.... well... Not quite perfected is a fair way to put it.

As long as LS have an in with MSN I will wine and dine whoever it takes, but woe betide their share price if they lose that deal.

Hey, so am I, but my site isn't classed as PPC:)

Don't want to wander into pedants corner, but in order to clarify:

I was seeking to differentiate between looksmart.com and looksmart.co.uk for those not already in the know.

Looksmart.co.uk may have PPC options, but they are still a directory with a pay for review option. Looksmart.com no longer have the pay for review directory option.
