That has got to be one of the longest lists I've ever seen!

IMO, the only ones that matter are:

www.aol.co.uk
www.msn.co.uk
www.freeserve.com
www.btopenworld.com
www.tiscali.co.uk
www.ntl.com
www.yahoo.co.uk
www.looksmart.co.uk
www.ukplus.com
www.google.co.uk
www.lycos.co.uk
www.altavista.co.uk
www.mirago.co.uk

shuffler

5:26 pm on Mar 6, 2002 (gmt 0)

oh, and www.uk.overture.com and www.espotting.com of course

BTOpenworld is Looksmart.
NTL use Looksmart.
Tiscali are also Looksmart.

ah yes, who best to submit to/pay is a different ballgame:

Yahoo, Ink, L$, Goverture, Espotting, Google, Lyocs & AV should cover it. And Mirago if you can be bothered.

Okay here are my dead-uns

[britindex.co.uk...]
[cilmeri.com...]
[excite.co.uk...]
[god.co.uk...]
[mugomilk.co.uk...]
[searchrocket.co.uk...]
[ukmax.co.uk...]
[webtop.com...]

Changes

[moonmist.co.uk...]
now
[moonmist.info...]

Not on your list

[ask.co.uk...]
[askalix.com...]
[abrexa.co.uk...]
[limeysearch.co.uk...]
[south-online.co.uk...]
[now2business.co.uk...]
[thematren.co.uk...]
[cambsearch.co.uk...]
[shiresearch.co.uk...]
[countyweb.co.uk...]
[smallbiz.uk.com...]
[yell.co.uk...]

Some of these actually belong to WebmasterWorld members, others I have found via other sources.

Surprising omission from your list is Cambsearch which has been around for a long time. (It appears to now be part of shiresearch - or could be that shire search is an extension of cambsearch_

Countyweb has also been around a while.

Smallbiz.uk.com has to win prizes for the worst SE/Directory yet. You can get listed and I have even managed a couple of referrals but the URL addition page takes some finding. (Its design is actually quite pleasant)

Ian

On average, what percentage of total traffic do you find comes from the smaller engines & directories?

I can't vouch for the quality of these, but in the interest of completeness:

[clickforchoice.co.uk...]
[purplepages.ie...] (irish sites only)
[selu.co.uk...]
[shopq.co.uk...]

Otherwise, looks like you got all mine covered already.

In general less than 2% combined total for minor SEs/Directories (non-ISP related).

A few surprising results on some sites the following engines/directories are responsible and on my worth keeing an eye on list.

ukplus - 1 site at about 2% on its own -ahead of some so called majors

great-british-pages.co.uk - the reason I couldn't put the combined at less than 1% on average. (I now submit all sites)

ukwebstart.co.uk - one site gets 3% of its traffic from this directory alone - doesn't seem to repeat with any of my other submissions though.

On the bigger reputation than performance list:

[mirago.co.uk...]
[askalix.co.uk...]
[searchengine.com...]

One omission from the original list (which should also be on the bigger reputation than performance list)

[scoot.co.uk...]

Biggest hassles to the UK Webmaster/Small Business owner

[scoot.co.uk...]
[askalix.co.uk...]
[countyweb.co.uk...]

High pressure telesales, they will try and sting you for £200 for a years inclusion (less for countyweb) - this money can be better spent elsewhere (e.g. Looksmart.co.uk or Inktomi)

A couple of ideas..........

I live/work in Surrey, most of my clients are in Surrey, so I always get them on SurreyWeb (www.surreyweb.org.uk) the theory is that many people are interested in a local service even though we're using a worldwide service to promote them.

Does it help a site's LinkPop by getting on minor directories and SEs even if there's little traffic coming from them?

Outside of the one's shuffler mentioned earlier I think a lot of the search engines and directories are there to make up the numbers.

You can cover virtually 95% of all UK search traffic with those that shuffler mentioned collectively (included the paid ones) and although there will be pockets of isolated traffic and the occasional additional link pop boost the benefit of being in a local directory/index will be one of credibility and ego rather than of necessity. Certainly when I submit sites I try to incorporate as many of these as possible (a few new names that I hadn't heard of, so thanks guys, but a lot will depend on the business model, be it local/regional/national/international.

I suppose the other thing is that it helps the "submit your site to 20,000 search engines for $20" merchants in business.

What amazes me is how some of these providers think you will part with £25-100 to be in an index with no qualified results, when the same money spent on an e-spotting campaign could bring you pretty reasonable amount of targetted traffic.

[uksearchking.com...] is a uk search engine and receives respectable traffic, thought I'd add it to the list.

sat and clicked through the lot, too nose around.
quite a complilation from PR > 3 to 7. most general, some industry specific, others interest specific and some regionals, i.e. scotland, ireland, england, wales.

<apologies for plug>
We're relaunching

url snipped ;)

at the moment, except for survival reasons we're having to relaunch it the wrong way round - new design (done), then new content and functionality.

ie we won't be a pointless "not another shopping" directory forever, mark my words!!

<once again, apologies for plug, but not if its been snipped!>

I don't know where you got the information from , but the Gloucestershire portal at softdata.co.uk is alive and well, and getting very good traffic.

Didn't want to split this enquiry to its own thread, but...

Did I see a link to the 'most used' UK SE's and directories somewhere? (US would be useful also)

Thanks in advance

umyup.co.uk is now spotjockey.co.uk
2nd change in the last 6 months i think - they were called something else before umyup
all i know about them is that they are run from a raq3 in UK2 and they seem to send a lot of spam

brotherhood_of_LAN: Thanks for the post about UKsearchKing.
are search king also local in regions of the uk
and the answer is yes. We have started to build up the county directories and all are doing good. Searchking and UKsearchKing are getting local. We want to provide all with local results and bring that ecommerce to the counties!!!

There's always our asktheinter.net - mind you, we haven't done anything with it for a while except add and remove sites.

Basically we've lost interest - much better things to be getting on with!

Anyone want to take it on?

Phil
