It is usual that the click tracking software will know you've been to the site so, don't waste your time to try that. You can probabably get away with it once.

Any suggestions about fooling their software - e.g. would using different IP addresses each morning do the trick.

stavs, you'd be wasting your time. Tricks have all been tried and doors closed to stop exactly that.
To be honest, the best bet is to let the site find its own popularity and concentrate on site promotion in other areas, such as, advertising, press releases, promotions, etc. Keep at this and click pop will soon show up.
It is a field that only the editors of the directory have access to, when you submit they will add what they think are appropriate keywords and in some cases may even assign them weight.
