AV.com now redirecting to AV.co.uk

The pop up at AV.com "suggesting" us UK surfers may be better served at AV.co.uk has disappeared for me. From my IP I now get a straight redirect to [uk.altavista.com...] .

Rumour was that they were going to implement this last autumn so it is not unexpected, anyone else seeing this?

It depends on the IP it spots you using.
My dial-up gets the popup all the time, but, I'm not using it at the moment and no redirect for me. :(

Yeah redirect here as well. Keep a deep link to altavista.com handy.

Regional redirecting is lame. The very act assumes that the surfer is too dense to know what s/he is putting into their location bar. Grab your self a couple of state side proxies.

Yeah, same here. In some ways I don't mind because (obviously) I've always done much better on UK AV, but it is insulting to everyone's intelligence. If I put in www.altavista.com, then that is where I bloody well want to go!!! (fumbles for the pills).
Seriously, if anyone from AV gets to read this, thanks a bundle, swell job, fellas.

And now I can't redirected if I try...

Clicking on the go to U.S site then disables the redirect: www.altavista.com/?ner=2 so its not a move done to frustrate us, just to give a short term bounce to those UK users who were using AV.com and were unaware of AV.UK.

I'm getting re-directed sometimes, and not other times.

BTW - most uses are too dense to think about which AV to use for their region.

Maybe they just don't want us Brits to see their nipple banners. :)

I have found away around it for now.
If you go to the bottom of AV UK and click on the link United States it will allow you access to the .COM web site!!
or go to this link
[altavista.com?ner=2...]

Hope it helps

Thanks for the tip Adam, the redirect is pretty irritating, as are most sites that think they know what you want:)

Oh well it's taken it's time to travel south but I also now can't(the old route)get to AV.com how annoying.

Thanks adamcmoran for the tip so us Uk'ers can still see whats happening in on big sister

I can't seem to get that link to work now.

May I suggest Safeweb [safeweb.com] for those who haven't already heard if it.

*Hint* Click on the go to US site link in the top right of the AVUK site.

The reason that the redirect described earlier no longer works is because its been elongated to track the users jumping to AV.com.

But why? [jumpeu.altavista.com]

I've just found that if I use an obviously UK isp, it refuses to go into .com - however if I go online with Pipex there's no problem

I'm still getting on with [altavista.com...]

This is really annoying :(

AV are apparently thinking about having a permanent US url so we don't have to go through the redirect.

Maybe if enough of us use the redirect now, which they're tracking, it will push them to do it.

i wish they would just let the user decide where he/she wants to surf. one reson i can think of for the redirect is that they are planning to introduce uk orientated services and adverts and are keen to see uk ip's hiting the uk site. if this is the case then surely they could introduce geo-targeted adverts that detect what to display from your ip rather than redirecting their traffic.
