I know that this has probably been asked a million times but what are the most important search engines and directories for uk only web sites.
If you have a dot com address will this cause problems with any of the search engines?
Any finally, if i submit to us search engines like altavista, excite etc, will I automatically be added to their UK engines as well. Alternatively if i submit to both would that be considred spamming?
I know it's an old thread, but try looking here [webmasterworld.com] for more info, and try the search facility at the top of this page will open up a wealth of knowledge and experience. Stand by for a lot of reading.
Some .com addresses are automatically filtered out of the results - for example, any portal that takes the Inktomi-based data will tend to return UK addresses only.
If you submit your .com addess to the US-based sites, that'll be your best chance of getting into the filtered results.
The exception is AV UK which has an adurl enabling you to add to both UK, then to .COM. With Yahoo, if it's a uk site with a .com, submit to Yahoo.co.uk
Do take a look around the forum, setting the Show Discussions back to All, or, as I mentioned, try the search.
Hope this helps.
I can't help with getting in from outside of the UK but from within the UK .co.uk has a better chance than .com
If you submit to Alta Vista UK, it actually then asks whether you want to submit to the .com site, I think that is the only one that does that
Some SE's have an Inktomi UK filter so a .co.uk will nearly always be better than .com - Search on Freeserve.com UK biggest ISP and you will see what mean. Other Directories like UK Plus will only allow UK sites in.
Spend a few minutes (hours) looking back through the past few months archive- if you take 50% of it on board you'll be a UK Guru by next Friday ;)
Nice to hear from someone on the south coast
I think your first questions is what everyone wants to know but from my own personel experiences yahoo/msn/freeserve/ask/lycos, others that I submit to are slput/speed/mirago although the traffic from them isn't great.
Unfortunatley freeserve is my main sorce of referrals but at a cost! so I do try my best to track down some uk generic terms through the .com side of go2 which are well worth tracking down as I have some great bidded terms for a cent that pass some traffic my way
I don't beleave the .com should cause any problems and the .com search engines as far as I know will not pass info over to the .co.uk ones and I always submit to both.
I'm down your way next Sunday at a swimming pool exhibition thingy (to help boost clients as we have done a few swimming pool sites recently) Fancy a pie & a pint???
Tigger
I pretty much echo tigger's reply though I also see an ever growing return on results from portal searches, particularly BTinternet, LineOne, NTL and Compuserve. These are all serving Inktomi results filtered for the UK (though I haven't worked out how BT operate their filter - try vans for sale on btinternet.com and you will see what I mean). These portal referals are now such an important source of traffic for both me and my clients that I always use .co.uk domains for promotion purposes as geting a .com in to these searches is almost impossible. Despite no advertising but because it occassionally forces searchers to it, HotBot UK has just overtaken Excite UK as a referrer. Again, .com results are filtered out of the listings. Hope this helps.
The racing sounds good though - time for a break ;)
