.com sites based in the UK.

How do search engines treat two sites on the same ip address?

Hi,

I have been running a ".com" web site from the UK for a couple of years and have built up quite a few links to the homepage.

At the same time, I also purchased the same domain name but with a ".co.uk" extension. Currently it is set up to redirect straight to the ".com" address.

As time has gone on, I have noticed our SERPs increase on google.com, but on google.co.uk searching for "sites from the UK" we are nowhere to be seen!

The first problem I have is that my server is based in the USA, so I understand I need to move to a UK hosting company.

After I've done that, would you recommend hosting both the ".co.uk" address AND the ".com" site with the new hosting company, or would you recommend diferent hosting companies for each site to avoid duplicate ip addresses?

I'm also aware that keeping the redirect how it is set up at the moment might penalize our sites for "duplicate content". Can anyone confirm this and offer a solution?

We only want to target the UK market, so any ideas you have for ways to increase our UK traffic would be gratefuly received!

Thanks in advance.

It looks like you've been following discussions on this as you are right about the UK hosting.

What you need to do is to ensure that you have the correct kind of redirect set up for the .co.uk from the .com Having different hosting companies should make no difference if the redirect is correct.

There's plenty of information here about setting a 301 redirect [webmasterworld.com]
