UK search results ok

The Web = awful

Hi,
When searching on Google in the uk there are two options default= "THE WEB" or you can tick the option "PAGES FROM THE UK"
Generally the difference between the two results is minimal, ie 2-5 places.
My main money keyword however returns these results.
The web = #246
Pages from the uk = #15
Can anyone shed light on a likely reason for this?
A typical result would be search for "widgets" the web = #20
search for "widgets" uk only = #16

The most likely cause is that an update is in progress.

This has been happening for several months
Only one keyword though.

Is it a keyword which is in common use in the US but less common in the UK?

Pages returned for uk only = 110,000
Pages returned for the web = 970,000
I realise that the web search is a lot more competative
but similar keyword figures are even more competative ie,
search widget uk only = 881,000 our site is #16
search widget the web = 5,150,000 our site is #19

In my experience it can depend on the keywords - if for instance you were targetting the keyword 'theatre' this is a UK spelling and I would expect a very close correlation between UK and Web search results with only a few places difference.

However if your search term was 'theater' this is a UK spelling and you could expect to feature very highly on the UK reuslts without having anything close to a good ranking on Web search.

Though I have seen some results which I have thought very unusual in the past, but mostly some investigation will give you a cultural reason for the discrepancy.
