Do the advertisers know?

very dodgy practices starting to re-appear?

Been surfin' about - as you do after a sesh in the pub - and have found some interesting little tricks going on...

A certain website (I won't name it) but lets just say it's the ' best search engine ' in the UK has listings within the Espotting listings for a business loan related word at quite a low rate ....

Now if you click on this - you get re-directed to the ' best search engine ' site which displays espotting results but this time it's a high paying ' personal loan ' related word worth nearly 15 times as much.

Now whilst I am not saying this is not a clever little ploy.... as someone that was thinking of going back to espotting now that their bids on so many terms are really low, I wondered:

1. How does the ethical side of this really work i.e. surely espotting must know exactly what's going on - they pay the cheques and allow the editorial listings right.

2. Does the advertiser really know what's going on here - that actually someone may potentially click on their link costing them pounds more in advertising when actually business loans is not anywhere near the same as personal loans.. it just happens to be far more lucrative.

3. This only works due to the affiliate sites that have proliferated in the past two years.... no wonder Overture must be smiling.

4. What were Findwhat.com thinking of. Unless Europe is a much better business - they must have overpaid for a company that has only just made a profit for the first time.

Has things got so bad at espotting they need to resort to this.

Come on guys - you still have a great business - but like this you will lose many advertisers.

ANy thoughts out there - there are loads more examples I was going to give - but I got bored and am going back down the pub!

The key to this is fully understanding where the advertising money is being spent. If advertisers watch their ROI it will come out in the wash.
