Rebrand with same data!

Rebranding appears to give a huge boost in search engines!

How can a UK search company using the same data just rebrand itself www.brand.co.uk, www.brandcityname.com , www.brandlocal.com etc etc and then rank 8 out of the top 20.

Some of these pages that rank have nothing to do with the search query, are they cloaking or something?

Hi Netvista and welcome to WebmasterWorld

This was a problem ages ago with alot of the PPC parnters like espotting, overture etc etc.... IMO Google and too a less extend Yahoo created a Blacklist and started slowly killing these sites... with a bit of luck they will clean up these guys too

If it's the people I think it is there lots of post at WebmasterWorld mentioning how bad they are and the fact that the telesales team are really really pushy..

Unfortunately - if you are refrring to what I think you are - they haven't been touch'd yet unfortunately.

248k pages - how stoopid do google look on some results whwre they still appear to be most of the top 20 ....

Since my original post I have looked into this a bit further and I reckon I can do the same (similar) as they have done to my site in less than a day.

This would give me four or five sites that are all very similar to each other using the same data on various sub domains.

My existing site targets about a dozen quite competitive product based keyphrases that I "usually" appear on page 1 for.

The only thing holding me back is that everyone I ask say that I will probably end up with all the sites (including my original - quite successfull site) banned or hugely penalised. That is apparently what should happen!

But given that google haven't done anything about these guys and that we are entering peak sales time for my products - it might be worth the risk. Certainly if I had more than one site I would definitely be willing to give it a go on one of them.

Have the rules changed? Is this allowed/acceptable? are there other people getting away with this?

Is it worth risking the long term success of my site for a short term gain (potentially very large short term gain)?

Any additional advise would be most welcome.

If I was you I would not "Touch" this idea.

I had thought of doing the same until you look deeper into what and how they have linked everything together and it becomes a big NO, the navigation at the bottom of the page leave it wide open for a eventual google cull of the very large network of interlinked domain names.

In theory it's a good idea and yes they are getting away with it but should only be tried on throw away domain names for short term gain.

You don't have to have a large network or even a large site to compete with these so called big boys just make sure you build your site better and above all keep it clean if you still want to be around in a few years time, if not then give it a go.

(a web site is for life not just for Christmas)

Me too. I hate those threads where everyone knows what's going on but I'm in the dark. :(

'Fess up. Who took the "search" subdomain for their .co.uk site down? It now has a title that presumably spells "Ah! Gone".
