I have been hibernating for the last 4 months and things have changed.

I have a couple of new sites to register, with no budget.

Other than Google are there another free search engines and/or directories I can submit to. DMOZ unfortunately is out of the question as most linking is via affiliates.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi DaveN and Engine

Thanks for the replies but not what I was really after.
In the good old days you could submit a site to 10 or 20 search engines/directories for free. Now it is pretty much just google and dmoz.

As I have no budget at all until the website starts generating revenue, I need to submit to any se/dirs that are free (and will hopefully boost a google ranking).

One to build up the links and two for the extra exposure.

Can anyone suggest a list of se/dirs that isn't paid for or dont include just listing overture and espotting results.

Many thanks

lloyd,

This [webmasterworld.com] might help you get up to speed.. see msg #4. It's probably not the answer you really want though.

lloyd, did you see this thread:

Movers & Shakers: Top 50 Search Engines [webmasterworld.com]

Should provide a starting point for you.

The advice about a Yahoo submission is good. Bear in mind that Google does not appear to be ranking new sites for several months (search for threads on 'sandbox') after launch, also people claim G may not be crediting new backlinks for the same period. If you are relying on 'free' traffic to generate revenue before you can pay for directory submissions, you may be in for a wait.
