Opera browser for Mac doesn't impress me

Am I missing something?

As you likely know, the Opera browser is now free. So, I installed it and started moving around the web.

I don't like how you have to go to "panels" to access your history, and sometimes the back button doesn't work. I read the help, but it was no help.

I try to keep an open mind, and it does seem to have a few nice features (such as the Top Ten visited sites button), but all in all, I'm happier with Safari.

Is the new Safari update that came out this week a marked improvement? I don't have 10.4 yet.

If you've no need to check a website you've authored against all major browsers, then by all means stick with Safari.

The new Safari on 10.4.3 is the first browser to pass the Acid 2 test (search Google for details), and it's quick. That apart there's no real difference between this version and older ones - it just adheres more tightly to more web standards.

I guess the big thing for me with Opera is that I can use some sites that refuse to code for Mozilla or Safari - but even then my milelage varies.

My belief is that Its good to have options - I still haven't found a browser that I can use all day and have it do what need it too.

Ah Weeks, but let's be fair here... it takes a lot less research and development for Opera to impress an IE user than a Safari user... most of these Windows folk don't know what they're missing...

I also agree that Safari is overall a better browser for browsing. No other browser has easier access to History, Tabs, or Bookmarks, and very few browsers are as out-of-the-way and easy to use. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Safari looks better too... the aesthetics of application GUIs are much more noticeable on a Mac.

What I like about Opera over Safari is the same stuff I like about it over Windows browsers... one-click page validation, zooming, etc. All the gadgets.

As for HTML rendering, I've always found Opera and Safari to be close cousins... easily the most strict browsers, and most of the time, if you have a rendering problem in Opera, you sure as hell better believe you have that problem in Safari. Looking at it that way, there's little need for a developer to use both on a Mac... I go with Safari and Firefox. I have IE:Mac as well, but most of us know that you only use that for two reasons: A) you need a good laugh; B) you're a masochist.

Yeah, Don, Safari is much better than IE. But, Opera has is not up to Safari in functionality. I do like the zooming on Opera and a few other options, but Opera's back button freezes up. I don't like how complex (OK, different) it is to view history, either. Opera for mac is just not there yet, but if they could tweak it, it could be cool.
