I need to build a site with Actinic.
I've got a mac G4 Ibook.

I've bought Actinic E-Business - Is it worth it to buy Virtual PC and try and run Actinic on it?

What else can I use Virtual PC for (IE, weblogs, for instance)

Help!

I need to decide within the next few days!

its gonna be really dog slow.

if you pay a visit to the Apple store, there is a reason that they only have VPC running on a a couple of G5s.

if this is something you are going to be using regularly, you would be better off finding a cheapo Windows box + monitor and dedicating it to that app.

my opinion after running VPC 6 on both a G3 and G4 iBook.

I agree with Microcars, but would just add:

If you do decide to use VPC on your iBook, be sure to buy as much RAM as possible.

Virtual PC is one of those rare apps that you will have noticeably faster performance by quitting other applications.

Although I do agree that it's slow, I think that with sufficient RAM, it's not too bad. I've done a lot of intensive things in the past with Virtual PC on iBooks and was mostly satisfied with performance.

That's a good point.

You have to "assign" Windows "X" amount of RAM when you use Virtual PC, so quitting all other apps and assigning it as much RAM as you can WILL help.

hopefully you can find a way to "test drive" this setup before you go buying a copy of Virtual PC with XP on it or something.

All depends on your needs, if you only need it for testing purposes I would load up on ram for the mac and optimize for the program.

But then your kind of stuck with dedicating your mac using a emulator to run a pc app if you decide to go big time with it. (which kind of defeats the purpose of having a mac in my opinion)

If you get a $400 emachine and load a gig or so of ram in it with win xp home - you get a dedicated win box with legal license for xp and if need be can upgrade to XP Pro etc.

You can test your wintel apps and even rollout the final product on them with no headaches of making sure your virtual network connectors are working correctly after a security patch or version upgrade of your mac and your Virtual pc operating systems. (been burned there myself one to many times).
