so occasionally my internet slows down ALOT, like from 150kb/s to 2kb/s. i've noticed when this happens the modem is really hot when it does this, so my guess is the modem is overheating and thus slowing down, but i'm not sure if that is plausible, or if modems do that. if not, im guessing there is something wrong with my pppoe or ethernet setting, which i have absolutely no idea how to configure.

also... i have a imac g5 17" 512mb ram 1.8 ghz...

Modems are a very common thing to go out. If you are having problems, I'd start there. Did you get it through your ISP? Most times they will bring a new one out for you to try and if it works, they will sell it to you, and if not, you're not out any $$. Also does your modem go into a router, or does it go directly into your PC? If it goes through a router, I'd check that as well...

i don't have router, and yes, i did get it from my ISP. but i'm not sure if it's that, because right now, for example, it's really really hot, but the internet is still working fine.
