I immediately called Apple and they said that some sort of backlight needs to be replaced. I bought the computer from SmallDog and have had it for about a month! Considering I live in the British Virgin Islands ... this presents more than a small logistical problem.
I have to pay to ship it back to Apple for repair and pay to have it shipped back again. Then I'll have to rent another display in the meantime. They said it will take about a month to repair it after its received. Shipping takes about 2 weeks both ways.
Has anyone else had problems with their cinema displays? Is this a common problem or did I just get a lemon?
<added>This is my 4th Mac and have never had a problem with any of them except of course age. My old imacs just kept on ticking. I could tell one of them was dying because it would switch itself on and off ... but it still lasted a year until it finally died.
I can't believe this is happening! I've never spent so much money on a computer. I thought I was going to be worry free for the next few years!

Hopefullly, you aren't being sujected to worse treatment simply because your outside of the States.
So far, they've been quite helpful ... but they did say that I'd have to take the matter up with Small Dog and that it really wasn't "their" problem. That ticked me off!

I've got 2 of them in extended desktop mode on my desktop, and we've got about 10 others within the office here. I have never had any problems like what you are talking about. Is it getting it's power from the DVI, or do you have it pluged into the wall? I know that on the older Apple displays, the backlights were picky about the power they were being fed. The worse problem I've had is on one we had a few dead pixels, but they were way out on the edge of the screen, so I didn't make a stink about it.
Did you purchase the Applecare with your display? If so, THEY should be picking up the tab in sending you a postmarked package to put the display in, and send it back to you free of charge. I don't know though, being as you bought it from a retailer and not the Apple Store. They can be real buttheads when it comes to merchandise not purchased from Apple directly. Have you thought about taking it back to where you bought it, and asking for a replacement? Being so new, they may have no problem with doing that.

We have a guy on island who can tweak things and fix most any software problem as well as minor hardware problems, but when a manufacturing defect comes into play ... then it becomes a major problem.
Having said that, the techs in the BVI for the PC market are no better than my guy. I hear the exact same horror stories from PC users, so really, its six of one half dozen of the other.
The problem is that when you live in the islands, you just have to deal with this sort of thing. The question I was asking was if anyone else has had trouble (of any kind) with their cinema displays?
Turn off your Mac, then unplug it, then unplug the monitor from your Mac.
Leave it to sit for awhile (I usually give it 15 minutes to be sure) then plug it all in and try it.
This has saved me from the 1/2 dim screen and flashing light on 3 occasions. It always seems to happen while the monitor is sleeping. After unplugging everything, the light doesn't flash and the backlight is fine for another 8 months or so.
I have had to deal with Apple product support when I hade a logic board fail, you have to be agressive but professional. I don't know how much money you give Apple yearly, so maybe that made a difference when I tossed that comment at them. (not that it should)
