Is it normal for this file to be so big?
I deleted the giant thing, hope my laptop runs good now.....
I kept getting the Zero disk space error....
I'd delete some movies or other big stuff and a little while later again with the Zero disk space warning...
I think I fixed it now but that darn log file sure did get big?

Anyone else played this game?

thanks!

I once installed a screensaver or some such nonsense that was *continuously* crashing and my crash log file was up to about 4 gigs before I realized it. Your system does an excellent job of recording the sloppy coding of inefficient developers. Have you looked at the system.log for curiously repetitive entries? I found the log files to be surprisingly easy to figure out -- look for things that happen over and over again and nuke the offending app (when that app is non-essential). :)

Mac OS X has scripts that run that compress and delete the old logs. Problem is, though, is that your computer has to be on at the scheduled time...and the default times are early in the morning when your computer is most likely turned off.

There is an app called Onyx that will do those tasks for you. Using it, you can delete the log files, and do some other cool stuff like clear the caches for things...this should clear some space on your hard drive.

I would look through the log and see if it tells you what exactly bloated like that.

Logs can give you insight into why and how things are happening. If you keep getting the zero disk space error then look through that log and see what might be misbehaving.

If the sys log is that large it may be a problem with a driver constantly writing errors to the logs. You may want to check your consol also. Chances are if it's writing to the sys log, the consol is also being written to. If your consol is also huge, check it and see what it says. A lot of times there is VERY good information in the consol that will help you in determining what exactly is happening.
