Trouble installing MYSQL on os x 10.3.7

I am trying to install mysql on a G5 running os 10.3.7. a month ago I installed it on my g4 with out any problems, yet this time I tried a few different online tutorials and still have not been able to get it working. One thing that may be causing it is when I try to make a new user named MySQL with a short name of mysql, but it will not let me, it only lets me name the short name mysql1. and says the name mysql already exists. Could this be causing the problem? I have reinstalled the system from scratch between every try. any help will be greatly appreciated!

Are you trying to install from source? You can always install a package from [entropy.ch...]

I'm not on my mac right now and I forget how it handles users (ie. it's not /etc/passwd). Why not just run it as mysql1 instead of mysql and see if that works. I don't think this will cause you any headaches, but I'm a programmer not a sys admin.

1) the mysql user and group!is! pre-defined in Mac OS X since 10.2 so there's absolutely no reason to try and define them once more.
2) your best bet in installing MySQL will be the package from [serverlogistics.com...] . It's simple and comes with everything needed: pref.pane and startup item, as well as installing itself where it's easy to get at it.
