Mac image database?

Recommendations for a digital photo collection

I think I've asked this question before, but I continue to find this a frustrating topic. My collection of digital photos has gotten out of hand, and I need a *simple* database system to find things in it. What I'd like to do is be able to store IPTC information *in the image files* and just search for things by caption, keyword, etc. (I know, entering all that in the first place is going to be rough.) I tried iPhoto and it drove me crazy. I tried iView MediaPro and it was so counterintuitive I could never get it to work. I've just started testing something called QPict, which actually seems pretty good so far. Does anyone have any positive or negative experience with it?

Secondarily, if there are any industry standards for formatting the IPTC data one puts in a file (country first, then state, then city; or vice versa) I'd be glad to know. I'd hate to enter all the data, try to share it with a service of some kind, and be told it was all listed backwards (or some strange thing like that).

have a look at extensis portfolio, it might be what you are looking for. another similar one is canto cumulus. portfolio is better known.

Many thanks for the pointers. I took a look at extensis, and it's $3000, while QPict is $35, so I think that makes one decision for me. I couldn't find the price for canto, but from the website it looks fairly expensive (if you have to ask, you can't afford it).
