Does anybody know how I can have my dreamweaverr mx files (.htm and .html) load in Mac OS 9 and below?
Situation: I created html files and modified others in MX on Mac OS X. I tested the site on many browser in OS X and on windows. but when I tried on OS 9 and a friend on os 8.6 well the files seem to have no bindings at all nor does netscape 4.08 load them correctly(nor does netscape 4.6 see them in os 9). I did call apple thinking this was an OS issue, they said to call Macromedia I called Macromedia, they are in a meeting and most probably will bounce me off ... Does anybody know of a solution? anything even if it means modifying my 600 files

Regards

Akhar

Welcome to WmW akhar

I don't your answer, we'll have to wait for some of our Mac masters for a possible solution but another option might be to post to the macromedia online forums. That could also get some response.

When you go to the macromedia home page they are located on the lower left.

They never answer, I had a bug submission and it is still there with no answer, my faith in macromedia is diminishing by the minute.

have you tested them on a PC to see if it is an OS specific problem?

You would think Macromedia would be a bit more on the ball.

Yes I tested on windows 2000 and windows 98 they work without a hitch!! I did more thourough checking and the file that do not open do have a comon denominator : their created date doe not appear in OS X it is shown as "--"

I was helping Akhar check these on different mac OS. The files weren't even recognized as html files by OS 8.6. When opened manually in IE5 they worked, but netscape 4.08 definitely did not think they were html. They wouldn't even appear in the open dialogue box. When we checked them in OS 9 the same thing happened.

I think I found the problem but not the solution, it seems that if I create a web page or any other file for that matter, and that I manipulate it with the terminal, say copy or move it, it will "break it " somehow. any unix commandline gurus?

after being on hold with tech support at apple I was told that apple only supports the GUI in Mac OS X and that my actions with the terminal are not covered. So I am back to square one.

why do you have to copy or move them from the terminal? Can you test them without moving or copying them or move them in a different manner?

I use the terminal because "cp *.htm /Volume/ISO" copies newfiles over old ones a lot faster than If I dragged and dropped!! secondly, because I have a terminal and that I can (sorry if I sound pissed). But apple touts having a unix os and using unix tools voids the warranty that does not make sens at all. Thirdly this might all turn out to be a metadata problem : where OS 9 and - cannot read the files because Unix ( OS X) does not create files with metadata (rememember when jobs said OS 9 was dead) so unless I can find a way to reanable metadata on my files I'll have to drop support for those other OSes (or use windows to create files, because those seem to work just fine).

Here is the final stance on my problem:

It is a metadata error, as it turns out the creation date hooplah was because my disk image where I stored my files was itself without one and damaged ( though disk utils did not see any problems). IE 5 on OS 9 works netscape 4 doesn't. For an unknown reason the OS doesn't link them to the proper apps as it would if they had been created under a DOS/Windows environment. That said, beware of metadata issues.

akhar: Basically, you ain't moving the resource fork with the file when you use the terminal. Try this: Don't use "cp" or "mv", use CpMac that came with in "/Developer/Tools/CpMac" and MvMac that came in "/Developer/Tools/MvMac", respectively. (note: I think you have to have the developer tools installed to use those)

Dreamweaver mx only works on Mac OS 9.1 and above. This may have something to do with your problem. It won't work with OS 9.0 or below.
