I was curious if anyone knows where I can get information regarding the statistics of how many folks are using OS X as opposed to OS 9 and below, and also how many mac users may be using safari as opposed to IE 5.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

In my stats from this month there are 7.1% MacIntosh and 1.7% Safari users.
Looks like most Mac users didn't upgrade to MacOs-X yet (X is required to use Safari) or they are using another browser.

Bear in mind, the number of OS X/OS 9 users is different than the number of Web surfers on the platform...

The folks at OneStat.com say they can give you that answer...for a price.

how many mac users may be using safari as opposed to IE 5.

This is a tricky question, and I have never found a definitive answer on the Web, but a few things we know:

1) Safari is only available for Mac OS X

2) MSIE for Mac is a discontinued product

3) Safari's usage share is growing

4) Some websites report Safari is their most common Mac browsers; others, report Mac IE is most common

If you are looking to support just 1 Mac browser, you've got a tough choice on your hands. The target audience of the website may be the deciding factor.

Here's a good arcitle on Mac browsers:

Thanks guys! I do appreciate the info. All of our websites display fine in safari. Some of the older graphic machines are still running OS 9 and they have IE5 on them. Someone saw a couple of the sites screwed up in that particular browser which cause a small ripple.

Mac users are on average only about 1.5% of the total visitors to our sites. So I was trying to get an idea of how many of those users are OS X w/ safari.

Just a few days ago during his WWDC keynote Steve Jobs said that 50% of all Mac users are on OS X.

I don't know how perfect AWstats (6.1) is at detecting the OS, but it says:

Mac: 7.2%
OSX: 5%
OS9: 2.2%

Of course, I use OSX, so that is a little off, but it is off of 712,851 hits.
