how do I open one of these types of files? stuff it expander doesn't seem interested in opening it. when i click the .pkg file to install it, the os 9 applications folder opens briefly in the dock, then closes again. and that's it.

thanks!

*.pkg files are Mac OS X only installer files. Under Mac OS X you should simply be able to double-click these, and then they ought to do their magic. If not, then you might have an incomplete or otherwise damaged *.pkg file, and then I'll suggest you download it again and try once more with a fresh copy. These *.pkg files have nothing at all to do with Mac OS 9, so if the classic environment tries to handle it, that's an indication the *.pkg file has been damaged in some way. And keep *.pkg files away from Stuffit Expander - Stuffit Expander can't handle these files and should never handle them in any way.

thanks. it seems to have happened with two different .pkg files. could it be that something my Mac is trying to use to open the .pkg file is not functioning?

*.pkg are selfcontained. *Nothing* should open them. My theory is that they have been damaged when you downloaded them - ie. incomplete downloads. If that happens then it's usually indicated by the file being registered as a Classic file.

Which *.pkg files did you have troubles with?
How did you download them?
Were they contained in a compressed format?

More likely your .pkg files are corrupt. Can you still double click other binary packages?

<what BjarneDM said. :)>

it's happened about four times now. limewire, safari, quicktime and a netscape upgrade. i have found that the .pkg will install if i drag it over the Installer utility, otherwise nothing.

halfandhalf, if you double click the .pkg file and your mac doesn't start the installer automatically, you should normally see a dialog box that lets you choose a application to open the file. Do you see such?

I don't. In my dock it appears to be attempting to open is OS9 applications folder, then that closes again... and nothing
