Hello,

I just bought a new 15" Powerbook. I can't wait until it comes in. Does anyone know why in the world the Powerbook does not ship with Panther? This is beginning to upset me. The ibook ships with Panther...

I am pretty sure you can get the $19.95 upgrade.

You can. My boyfriend bought his Powerbook after Jaguar came out and got the Up-To-Date thing so he got Jaguar for under $20.
I think it's just that they install the operating system en-masse on a bunch of hard drives, and then assemble the computers, and ship them out when they're needed. They don't custom-build every one. So if they haven't mass-installed Panther yet, they haven't mass-installed it. It takes a while to catch up with these things. Hence all the horror stories of Windows users getting viruses in the first 2 minutes they're online downloading the 6-month-old patch for the OS.

Thanks Dragonlady,

That does kinda make sense....just seems odd that the iBook ships with Panther and not the Powerbook. I was just curious really, I don't mind paying $20. It is more of a pain in the butt to have to pay $20, install, etc. etc. Oh well...

It's a quick install, though. It's a real pain, I understand, but I got a big thrill installing it, so think of it that way. :D
And do a clean install!

i'm in the same sitch. bought my powerbook and am waiting for my copy of Panther (£14) from Apple

i'm not too impatient though as its the first time i've owned a mac, and i've not really used one since i had an old iMac in my first web job for about 6 months so theres plenty newness things to play with :-)

i am looking forward to the rather special looking Expose and User Switching stuff though...

:-)

same story - AlBook bought after release of Panther came with 10.2.6 - paid my £14 (UK) and got Panther a week or so later. It rocks. It's faster, more polshed and you wonder how you ever lived without Expose!
