Welcome to WebmasterWorld and the Macintosh forum. First time I ever hear about this problem.
Error # 3 is serious. It is an illegal instruction. If a computer tries to execute an instruction that isn't in its vocabulary, you see that error. Seeing this at Finder level is a bit of a worry.
Did you perform new software installation lately?
If so, it could be a conflict with a new extension. I would try to get rid of new stuff in the extension and control pannel folders. (you can sort items by dates) Then restart to see.
The Desktop File may be corrupted, restart the Mac and hold down the Alt+Shift keys just after the Extensions have loaded, this will display the message "Do you want to rebuild the desktop?, click OK.
The Master Directory and the Volume Bitmap on the hard disk can use incorrect data about the number of files and other stuff on the disk. Use a disk repair program to correct it ASAP.
If the problem persists and all of your programs are in the same folder, I would create a new folder on the desktop, move everyting from the old folder to the new one and trash the old one. The new folder could be renamed and put back at root level of the HD later.
If this fails, startup from the system CD, backup your extension folder, your control pannel folder and your preferences folder in a new folder somewere. Perform a clean system install and restart from the CD. Then, in order to restore your Mac like it was before. The new preference folder can be replaced by the older one before you restart from the HD.
Then open your old extension folder and your new extension folders in windows side by side. Items not matching names from the old extensions folder to the new ones, can be copied in small batches restarting to test for conflicts each time. Then do the same with the control panel folder.
Hope this helps
