Unicode character and Safari

Did display - now it doesn't - Why?

I'm encoding a page in UTF-8 and I need to include Unicode character &#x02BF (which - if you're interested - is a half circle used to designate a particular sound in Semitic languages like Arabic and Hebrew).

Thing is..... Up until yesterday, for a total of 4-5 days, Safari displayed the character perfectly in the font that I'd chosen for styling text (Helvetica).

Today, for some unknown reason, I'm getting the little square gizmo displayed where the character should be - you know, the kind you get when a browser won't support a character...... Weird.... How can it be that Safari can display a character successfully one day, the next baulk at it completely?

If anyone's got any ideas as to 1. How this could come about; 2. How I can fix it..... It'd do a great deal for my piece of mind.... (I'm not imagining it.... it was definitely displayed there yesterday.....!)

Could it have something to do with font substitution? If so, why has it suddenly stopped?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but did you (or someone else or something) change the default charset encoding of safari? Look at your safari prefs - is the encoding (first tab from the left) UTF-8 or some other encoding? If it is UTF-8, change it to ISO, restart safari, change back to UTF-8, restart safari. Just a guess: maybe the prefs are corrupted or confused ...
