Mac users tell us why Mac's don't suck - I want to know.

Post one reason why users should choose a Mac over a PC.

Here a big one: waaaaay fewer security problems. Viruses, spyware etc. rarely target Macs.

I'm a PC user but in my experience software designed for a specif machine always runs better due to the fact you but have to write of every different case scenario like graphic, sound, chipsets etc etc

it works? no, really-- it works. been using a powerbook for almost a year now and the one problem i've had is that if you leave the internal microphone on, it gives feedback in specific circumstances. The cure? wait until panther comes out and upgrade. in the meantime, leave the stupid microphone off unless you're using it.

used a win98 pc for three years-- problems? kernel32 error, couldn't use certain of my programs, had to restart every other day, eventually lost most of my data in a hard drive crash. then used a win2k pc for two years. lost much data in hard drive crash a month ago. had some backups, but not all. pain in butt.
i've never been happy with the darn thing. there was always *some*thing I couldn't do with it that I'd wanted to.

as for macs, they're popular enough now that there's some really cool freeware out for them. they're also still rare enough that if you ask for help with one, you'll get it, instead of the ho-hum my pc is down again if you ask for help. there are still mac fanatics, like there used to be pc fanatics in the dark ages. that's kinda nice.

pardon my total lack of shift key, i'll plead the excuse that i'm worried this is a troll to excuse my laziness. really, it's just monday morning and i'm lazy.

Time will tell, but it's also quite possible that they've developed the first GUI on top of a UNIX-type OS that is usable by the masses.

Are the masses the people who don't use a GUI in Linux?

part of the jedi geek force :), not one of the "dark side" like everyone else.

- innovation: firewire (IEE1394, i.Link to PC users), newton, rendezvous. PC manufacturers simply copy.
- unix OS
- last longer avg 3-5 yrs
- best laptops - looks, size and weight (IMO). you dont want a brick now do you?

- plus all the above posts

:) Partly, yes. But my post wasn't intended to start a flame.

With that in mind, most of the Mac users I know (not all Mac users, just the ones I know) couldn't install Linux without some serious help. They've admitted that, mostly because I've asked them about it.

They can install OS X however. And get it running all by themselves. IMHO, that's a very positive thing for the Macs, because most UNIX-head admins will be happier supporting a UNIX-like OS that non-UNIX types will actually *want* to use.

I think that if Apple continues development of this excellent operating system to other platforms, it could create some interesting competition that hasn't existed yet.

Honestly, for me it is a hardware issue.

When I plug a piece of hardware into a Mac, it works. Ninety nine percent of the time there are no drivers to install, just plug it in and go.

Hey DragonLady, think carefully before you go into business.

You're undercapitalized! ;)

Thanks guys. You've given me some good answers. Me and a friend of mine are always arguing the toss over which is better. Maybe the answer is that neither of them are better, they're just targetted at different types of users?

I'm starting to think that Macs don't suck, now what about Mac users, do they suck? I don't thinkwe want to get started on that one. Especially on a Mac forum!

>Do Macs really suck?

Nope - they rock.

>Why?

Well, see, i'm a fool and i'm lame - i allways go the most comfortable, quickest and most satisfactioning way to get the results i need. Don't want to mess around with any software or hardware that is a myst even to its developers. And believe me, i'm not a masochist.

My question to you: did you ever work on a mac and compared results, nerves loss and satisfaction with working on windows? Seriously ...

one can't be serious about this question, seriously. either you feel the difference or you don't feel it.

Who the heck is Ellen Feiss? Apart from the person that pic on the page Mardi_Gras linked?

As someone who normally uses a PC but sometimes has to work on a Mac, only thing I can say is that I am much more at ease with my PC. But it could just be because I'm used to it. I just miss the right-click, the command line and some other PC things.

Try a Google search. Lots of material still knocking about by the looks of things.

Ellen Feiss was the teenage girl who looked like she was on drugs talking about losing her homework on a PC. She later claimed to have just taken some cold medicine which made her drowsy :)

What Ellen said about her appearance - from browndailyherald.com...

I do admit to looking pretty out of it in that commercial — I think I look horrible. It was after school, but I was the last person to make the commercial, so by the time I made it it was like 10, so I was really tired. The funny thing was, I was on drugs! I was on Benedryl, my allergy medication, so I was really out of it anyway. That’s why my eyes were all red, because I have seasonal allergies. But no one believes me.

But no one believes me

That is certainly true!

Macs suck in the same way Ferraris suck: They are powerful, well designed and expensive. Those who drive a Ford Festiva just wouldn't understand ;)

When I was a code monkey I worked on a PC. Now that I'm a designer I work on a Mac. Back in the bad old days that Sony Trinitron monitor was gold!

Personally I love Mac users.

They know what they want and they're not afraid to pay for it..

My kind of people :)

>the right-click, the command line

Get a 2 or 3-button mouse-- they work like a charm in OS X.
Even the scrollwheel is fine in 10.2 and higher.

The command line:
hard drive --> applications --> utilities --> terminal

There is is. Go nuts. It's all in there. Have a blast.

ah, but you know you want one. It starts as just a tingle, then it becomes an itch.. then the itching becomes burning.. heat upon heat upon heat upon heat..

You'll get one soon I'm sure :)

NB: you really need to have read/watched Dune to understand what I'm blathering about here :)
