I am a fairly new Webmaster that is very new to the Mac world. When I make changes to the website I work for, I use transmit and BBedit as the text editor. Everyone else on staff uses PC's with notepad. When I upload my changes to the server, it scrambles the code with strange characters and removes all the structure of the code when accessed on a PC. This has become an inconvience to the other staff making updates and changes. Is there any Text editor for the mac that will be compatible with notepad/wordpad? Please Help. Thank you much!

Dig through the preferences, and set it to save files with Unix line endings. Should work fine then... I've never had a problem with it.

I have used BBEdit for years with much success. I'm sure it's just a settings problem of some kind. In the "Save as..." dialog try the "Options" button -- perhaps you are saving files in Unicode or something like that. I don't know what the specific problem might be, but I bet if you experiment with some of the settings you will be able to fix it easily.

Wow, thanks alot. I probably wont be able be able to test it until Im around a PC, but if this works, Im sure it will save me a ton of headaches. So just to make sure this is where I should be, I see:

_ Force New Line at End

Default Line Breaks:

_Macintosh
_Unix
_DOS/Windows

Currently Macintosh is selected...
I should choose the unix button and that should solve the problem?

Exactly. Select Unix line endings. And make sure you're saving everything as a plain text file in the "save as" dialog. :)

I have a Windows box right next to my Mac at work. I can save a file in BBEdit and FTP through Fetch on the Mac, up to the Linux server, back down to the Windows box, edit in Notepad, and FTP through CuteFTP back to the server, and back around again... all without a problem.

I don't see a problem here. Seems like a Windows problem to me. :)

Just kidding, of course. What the others suggested should work fine. The extra characters they are seeing are the Mac's carriage returns. Unix uses a line feed character to tell the end of the line. DOS uses a carriage return and a line feed. If the server is running Windows, and the text is still run all together in NotePad, you could try the DOS/Windows option. But, if you open the file in something other than BBEdit (like SimpleText), it may look funny to you.

Mivox, what format does NotePad save in by default? DOS? Does it have problems with displaying a Unix file? If you open a Unix file and save it, does it change the format to DOS? (I never use Windows, which is why I am asking...just curious.)

I think you should select DOS/Windows. That is what i used to use for a crossed shop and it gave me the least problems.

Thanks Jatar and co. Ill give both a try. Let me ask another, kinda unrelated question since I have such an informed group. I have a 17in powerbook, but the browser window is so small in proportion to the screen. Even in Photoshop, the desktop and menu/icons are very small and dificult to see. On my desktop with a smaller screen, everything is larger. Only in Adobe reader does the display utilize the potential of the 17 in. Is there a setting that can be adjusted to better this? Thanks alot for the help, gang.

Would it be as simple as changing your screen resolution to a higher one?

chico, try playing with the resulution settings of your pb. OS 8/9: Controllpanel > Monitors / OSX: System settings > Monitors. If you change the resolution down to 1024x768 or even 800x600, you'll loose some width and height but the dimensions of text, icons and stuff are bigger thus easier to see / read.

yeah, Ive tried that, only the picture gets a little fuzzy and loses clarity. THought there might be some internet function or setting where you could increase the way the pages/programs are viewed. My photoshop is more obvious and easy to see while sitting back. Maybe not. Just such a large monitor. I expected more viewing room would give me a larger picture

Mivox, what format does NotePad save in by default?

Honestly, I've never paid enough attention to notice. ;) I just know when I save as plain text w/Unix line endings in BBEdit, and use use the default "save" command in Notepad, nobody seems have any problems using the files.

Does it have problems with displaying a Unix file?

Not that I've noticed.

DOS/Windows - what else!? ;) By default you'll have cr/lf's (char 10 + char 13).

DOS/Windows - what else!?

Sorry. Forgot this was MS, who imposes their "standard" upon everyone else.

As for the resolution, just because of the way an LCD works, probably only the native 1440x900 is going to look right. Other sizes may be okay if you turn off font smoothing. Just a thought, but I bet that some things will still look jagged. You could also try to up the size of the font size in the browser. Which browser are you using?

They crammed a 19" monitor into 17"...I guess it was too much.
