I posted this elsewhere but then found the mac forum......I want to take a screenshot but without the browser showing....I want to edit, what is the best free editing program or trial version?

I want to create a jpg image of this. Purpose is to make a portfolio page of some of my websites.

Sometimes I get to wonder if the whole world prefers pc's given googles PR tb, and so much stuff I come across that's only for pc.

thankz

I have always done the screenshot and then pulled it into photoshop and cropped out whatever I don't need and created the jpg from there.

found this

Shortcut Keystrokes

* Command+Shift+3 to capture Entire screen
* Command+Shift+4 to capture Cursor selected rectangle
* Command+Shift+4 w/caps lock to capture Window capture

I assume you are using OS X. If not, I would recommend upgrading, as you will have more options to do what you want to do.

Here's what I would do:

Print the desired web pages to a PDF file. Then, use an application to convert them to a jpg file (there are a few apps that do this). Then, use GraphicConverter (cheap), GIMP (cheap/free), or Photoshop (expensive) (or a "light edition" (cheap)) to edit the jpgs and get them in a manageable size.

Sometimes I get to wonder if the whole world prefers pc's given googles PR tb, and so much stuff I come across that's only for pc.

They most definitely do. But, with the exception of the Google TB, I have never needed a PC. And remember, the virus writers also prefer PCs. ;)

If you do't have photoshop, download their trial version. You can then do a screenshot, then go to photoshop and using the pull down menus at the top, File -> New. Then paste the screen shot in. Then use your Marquee tool to enclose the parts you want (you'll see the marching ants). Then go to drop-down menu: Image -> Crop.

Voila! You're done.

If you don't have photoshop, get it. Go to ebay and get version 6.0. Take some classes and learn how to use it. It will take your work up to a higher level. Essential. Definitely worth the time and money.

Graphic Converter is a great shareware program for image editing. It's got a bit of a learning curve, but should work great for cropping or editing screen shots.

Sorry for responding so late to this thread, but I just noticed it. No one mentioned Snapz Pro X (shareware). Great for taking screen shots of anything and you can crop/resize the image BEFORE you take the shot. It'll save the file in jpg, bmp, tiff, etc.

Download here: [apple.com...] .

IMHO it's one of the best screen shot programs out there.

oops, seems that link doesn't work, sorry. Just go to Apple's website and search for Snapz Pro X.

Check among the Utilities folder of the same name in your main Applications folder - you should see an application called Grab.... This I use frequently to get a basic screenshot (.tiff format) which I then edit with Graphic Converter (size / sharpen / transform to .jpg).

Two great things about Grab: 1. It's free (already included in your bundled utilities); 2. You can make a selection of the image you want to capture from the screen, reducing sone of the need to edit / crop.

A very handy little program. Go for it.
