It seems to me that anchor text with fewer keywords are doing better with this recent update/correction/adjustment/modification cycle that Google is in.
As a general rule of thumb, if you think something is spammy, then .. think about it again.

It's always a good idea to write anchor text that reads properly, instead of designing it around what the search engines will get from it.
Ask yourself, "what would make someone click this link?" and does the end user understand where this link will go before even clicking it?
Perhaps instead of:
spiderman, spiderman toys, Kids toys, batman
It could read:
Click for Spiderman kids toys!
Or:
Huge Selection of Spiderman toys for kids
Or something..
