company has a number of sites,

english-widgets
spanish-widgets
african-widgets
widgets
(dot. com domains)

these are travel websites, basically we own a number of domains which point to the different websites mentioned above. for example when we place an advert in the sunday times we like to know that that advert attracted so many people to the site specifically from that one advert - so in the sunday time we advertise costadelsol-widgets.com to point to spanish-widgets.com so we can record how many hits we got from that one advert. following me?

but now the boss wants to start creating doorway pages in places like geocities and triod to get listed in there member directories and generate some more traffic, he only aiming to optimise these pages from the meber directories not on larger search engines like ATW or Google, so relativly simple to do,

but what are the advantages diadvantages in doing this?

is there any point, we are a small private business who largely rely on word of mouth and good customer service, so we quite like attracting the 40+ surfer who may use these free web space directories as his isp has set his browser to a particular free wespace site?

any suggestions?
Dan

I have never heard of those free sites directories picking up much traffic. I would say it is a bit of a time waster, IMHO.

You can track ads easier by just advertising the URL in the print ad to go to a specific directory (ie. travelsite.com/spanish) and then tracking it that way. That builds URL recognition branding of your main site in the print media also. Just block that directory from SE spiders via robots.txt so you know that all the traffic to that directory is from viewers of that ad.
