Hi,

I don’t think that all users want let you know that they are using your software. But for the others you can offer an online registration or something. That can be an e-mail that will be send to you including some information about the user, OS, software version etc.

I distribute a small, supposedly secure, application.

As part of the installation, it sends me an email. If it can't send the email, it won't install. Now, I can think of ways around that, but my typical users probably can't

Or: as nameNick suggests, you could offer online registration. That could be compulsary (to unlock the software, or get the latest version) or optional (to unlock extra goodies or join an updates list).

Or: what they download is just the installer. It goes online to get the rest of the app when they decide to install.
